Our History

In 1959 there was a DBA (doing business as) certificate filed in the Oswego County Clerk’s office as Golden Sun Bus Service. The listed owner of the business was Leon Laws. At the time, Mr. Laws owned a golden palomino horse by the name of Sunny. This resulted in the name Golden Sun. Sunny was a show horse and Mr. Laws frequented many of the local fairs and competed in several competitions. As a result, he won many accolades and ribbons for the horse’s performance.

On July 6, 1966 Waldo Haskell, Sr. and his wife, Mabel, originally from Fayetteville, NY, purchased Golden Sun from Leon Laws. At that time Golden Sun had contracts with both the Fulton and Oswego School Districts.  In 1979, the Oswego contract ended, but the Fulton contract remained.  However, the Fulton School District transportation was shared between Golden Sun and Gibson Transportation which was owned by Mrs. Ruth Gibson of Volney. Eventually, due to the ill health of Mrs. Gibson, all of the Fulton School District bus routes were turned over to Golden Sun.

In 1980 Waldo Haskell, Sr. passed away and the business was then turned over to Waldo Haskell Jr. who ran the business with his mother, Mabel. Mabel passed away in 2011 at the age of 94. Mr. Haskell, Jr. then ran the business until his untimely death in 2014. Ownership of Golden Sun was then passed to Wally’s two daughters Pamela and Kimberley along with his son-in-law, Patrick Kinane.

Currently, Mr. Kinane is the President of Golden Sun Bus Service, Inc. The Haskell family is proud to have been able to keep Golden Sun running as a family business for over 52 years.
